Artist Statement

Danielle Jweid

The subject of my work is an exploration of humanity. This is illustrated through parts of us that make us human and what we encounter in the world that takes away our humanity. My work is to be a psychological evaluation of all aspects of our beings.

My goal is to create work where the form mimics the content; thereby increasing the level of involvement the viewer has in the experience. I hope to inspire self-reflection by the viewer through the anonymous nature of my subjects. Helping the viewer to become more aware of his or her own psyche and thereby arming them with another tool to enhance their lives.

Some of the themes I touch on include time, a sense of place, identity, discord between people, self-actualization and so on. Because our psyche is as interesting and varying as works of Art, it only makes sense that it should be represented as such.

Danielle Jweid is an Art Therapist and a professional artist. She is a graduate of Eastern Virginia Medical School and Old Dominion University. She holds a Masters in Art Therapy and Counseling and a Bachelors of Fine Art with a concentration in painting. Her interest in expressing psychological concepts was the result of education and life experience.

She began art at a young age, after her technical ability developed; she began to search for something greater than the duplication of an image. She was instructed in art privately starting at the age of 8 by two professors, Joseph Hinkson, and Jane Taylor.

At ODU, she was introduced to new materials through the professors and fellow students. She developed an interest in making the experience part of the painting though the use of several kinds of materials including plexi-glass, plexi-glass mirror, masonite, resin, etc. During the spring of 2009, an experience with studying abroad brought her attention to psychology and solidified her need to create universal concepts.

Danielle has been involved in several group shows including a student show at the Contemporary Arts Center, a scholarship show and student shows at the Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Gallery, an exhibition in Diehn Fine and Performing Arts for Undergraduate, a show at the Suffolk Museum in 2010 which was part of Minds Wide Open-Women in the Arts, and an exhibition at the Peninsula Fine Art Center Exhibition in 2010. Most recently, the James Wise Gallery hosted her solo show entitled Elements of Humanity in 2010.

In the future, Miss Jweid plans on doing public art pieces to continue her introspective series. In addition, she will continue to seek to exhibit her work in other local and national galleries.
